Soft tissue injuries are not easily diagnosed or confirmed—a fact that often results in costly misdiagnoses, prolonged treatment periods and fraudulent claims. These elusive injuries account for more than $200 billion in lost man hours and medical costs annually. As much as $60 billion of this is spent on workers’ compensation claims, 80% of which directly relate to hard-to pinpoint soft tissue injuries. In the past, the lack of an objective, reliable diagnostic tool made it extremely difficult to prove the legitimacy of a claim.

IDI has developed state-of-the-art evaluation and diagnostic equipment for soft tissue injuries. Our patented new technology uses an Electrodiagnostic Functional Assessment (EFA) to combine and enhance five medically accepted tests - electromyography (EMG), range of motion (ROM), functional capacity evaluation (FCE), grip test and pinch test. This non-loading and non-invasive technique can independently evaluate every muscle group in the body.

The benefits are clear.

The EFA is the only service that can objectively age and quantify soft tissue injuries. In legitimate claims, this test decreases cost by promoting faster healing through site-specific treatment plans.

The EFA can determine the following information:

• The nature, timing and extent of the injury

• The relative age of the injuries present

• A more precise location of injury

• The source of referred pain

• Whether the injury is an exacerbation of a previously existing condition

• Pre-injury status

• Whether the patient is compliant or malingering

• An objective degree of impairment

• Appropriate work restrictions, if any

• The significance of disk pathology, if any

• Site-specific treatment

iDi’s expert witnesses and the objectivity of EFA have been tested through litigation. Multi-million dollar decisions, which previously depended solely on the subjective testimony of patients and physicians, have now been overturned from the federal level down. In numerous cases, EFA was the major (or even sole) evidence.

In one sample study of soft tissue insurance claims, a group tested with EFA returned to work an average of 62 days sooner than the control sample. The EFA group also received a significantly smaller total claims amount—an average per-claim savings of $10,000 for the insurance company.

Currently, we can offer EFA as post-offer/pre-placement, post injury assessment, fitness for duty evaluation, ergonomic, or ADA assessment. certified personnel conduct all EFA evaluations and reports are made by a Board Certified Physician.

The EFA conforms to AMA, ACOEM, and OSHA guidelines. It also carries a strong 510(k) FDA registration which recognizes, among  other things, the EFA’s ability to distinguish between chronic and acute soft tissue injuries. iDi provides services nationwide, and we also allow physicians and treatment centers to provide the EFA on-site permanently through a Partnership Alliance Program. EFA is also portable, which allows for convenient on-site evaluations. A typical EFA takes approximately one hour.
